"At her side, | As ‘t were that none might bear her off, I saw | A giant stand; and ever and anon | They mingled kisses." -Dante Alighieri
Many artists before Gustave Doré had tried to illustrate Dante Alighieri’s epic poem, ‘The Divine Comedy’, but none could do justice to the vivid allegory. Doré was only 23 years old when he approached his publisher seeking a commission to illustrate it. His publisher refused, but Doré was determined, and he used his own money to publish the first cantica, ‘Inferno’, which sold out everywhere. Quickly realizing how wrong he was, the publisher begged Doré to come back in a telegram reading, "Success! Come quickly! I am an ass!"
This *limited edition print is lifted from the ‘Purgatory’ cantica and exposes the scene of a malevolent parade. The broken church cart is drawn by the Beast of the Apocalypse and tows a shameless prostitute, representing the defected papacy of Avignon. The harlot dallies with a political giant, the corrupted kings of France. When by chance her glance lingers over the Italian Dante, the giant flogs her mercilessly before the beast whisks them back into the thick forest.
You don’t have to make the same mistake Doré’s publisher did by passing on this masterpiece or the others available in our store. This **museum quality print will help inspire your own impious dalliances.
