About the Artwork

Created around 1412–1416, this richly detailed tempera-on-vellum scene depicts Lucifer presiding over a vivid medieval vision of judgment and Hell. The work appears in Les Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry, one of the most celebrated illuminated manuscripts of the late Middle Ages.

The scene is especially striking for its dense detail, dramatic color, and uncompromising depiction of punishment, torment, and the infernal imagination.
