About the Artwork
Stefano della Bella (1610–1664) was a Florentine printmaker and illustrator
known for his highly detailed etchings. Working in both Florence and Paris,
he produced images ranging from dramatic allegorical scenes to scientific
illustrations, including work connected with Galileo’s discoveries.
Death on Horseback Holding a Trumpet comes from
The Five Deaths (Les Cinq Morts) and presents Death as a
mounted figure sounding a trumpet — a stark image of mortality, warning,
