About the Artwork
This illustration comes from Gustave Doré’s 1883 series for Edgar Allan Poe’s
The Raven, one of the most famous collaborations between dark literature
and nineteenth-century illustration.
The image accompanies Poe’s lines:
“Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.”
