About the Artwork
Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin was a Russian illustrator whose work was deeply influenced
by Slavic folklore, mythology, and the landscapes of old Russia.
Vasilisa the Beautiful reflects the strange, mythic atmosphere that made
Bilibin’s fairy-tale illustrations so distinctive. Details such as the mushrooms
surrounding Vasilisa and the decorative treatment of the landscape give the image
its enchanted, slightly uncanny quality.
Bilibin gained widespread recognition beginning in 1899 with his celebrated
illustrations of Russian fairy tales.
