The Twisted Painted Faces of Johan Van Mullem

Johan Van Mullem is a Belgian Contemporary Artist living and working near Brussels in Sint-Genesius-Rode, a small town in Flemish Brabant. Born in the Congo and coming of age in Tunisia Johan has been deeply impacted by cultures foreign to his Flemish roots. Though trained as an architect he has always maintained a strong Art focus. Working with paint, pencil, and in sculpture, Johan creates haunting images almost entirely of morphing human faces. The strong shadows and intense brushwork of his portraits evoke the dutch masters of old with a modern stroke. Cerebral yet darkly primal Van Mullem enthralls the viewer.
