There was something dark, mythic and beautifully nostalgic about the world of folklore Ivan Bilibin created. Throughout his career he was inspired deeply by Slavic folklore and myths. He distinctly reflected the mountains, forests and lore of old Russia. Bilibin gained some renown in 1899, when he released his illustrations of Russian fairy tales which became widely popular.

Frank Frazetta's Fantasy World

One of our favorite Fantasy Artists at Dark Art & Craft is master oil painter Frank Frazetta. Over his long career Frazetta produced detailed art for Conan the Barbarian, Tarzan, John Carter of Mars and countless others. Frazetta defined the Fantasy and Science-Fiction art genres and at the same time transcended the rather orthodox world of pulp book covers and comic art to make his own name.

Ernst Ferdinand Oehme Dark Romanticism

Ernst Ferdinand Oehme was a German Romantic painter trained at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. At the Academy Oehme trained under Danish painter Johan Christian Clausen Dahl whose friend Caspar David Friedrich greatly influenced the young artist.
